Taylor Swift vs Met Gala: A history full of glamour, style and fascination.
After over one year without fashion’s biggest night, The Met Gala returns, bringing together the biggest names in fashion, music, entertainment, media, and more. The 2021 edition of the gala will take place this Monday (13) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York. With personalities such as Billie Eilish, Timothée Chalet, Naomi Osaka, and Amanda Gorman as hosts, this year’s theme will be “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”, aiming to celebrate North-American fashion.
Unfortunately, Taylor Swift is not present on the list of confirmed attendees, but the Taylor Swift Museum team put together a retrospective of all of Swift’s appearances at the Met in the past.
“SuperHeroes: Fashion and Fantasy” (2008)
Wearing Badgley Mischka’s 2008 Winter collection, Taylor invested in a gorgeous shimmering gold dress for her first ever appearance at the Met.
American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity” (2010)
2010’s theme explored the evolution of the modern American woman between 1890 and 1940. Swift wore a delicate yet sophisticated white Ralph Lauren gown complimented with her signature red lip look.
“Savage Beauty: Alexander McQueen” (2011)
As a tribute to the late Alexander McQueen and his contributions to the world of fashion, Taylor Swift nailed the ‘Savage Beauty’ theme by styling a J. Mendel gown layered with lace and mesh.
“Punk: Chaos to Couture” (2013)
Wearing J. Mendel once again, Taylor embodied the character of a classy punk star with a dramatic black dress detailed with jewels, and topped the look off with a dark eye makeup.
“Charles James: Beyond Fashion” (2014)
Placed at #63 on Harper’s Bazaar “135 of the Most Iconic Met Gala Dresses of All Time” list, Swift wore Oscar de La Renta as a nod to the resplendent glamour of Charles James’ gowns.
“Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology” (2016)
Elected the best dressed celebrity at that year’s gala by Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, and Fashion Magazine, Taylor’s presence at the 2016 Met went down in the history of her career. As the co-chair of that edition of the ball, Swift flaunted her new bleached hair and sported a custom Louis Vuitton gown, embodying the robotic theme of the night with her silver dress, gothic makeup and black knee-high heels. Taylor secured another spot on Bazaar’s “135 of the Most Iconic Met Gala Dresses of All Time” list, at #81.
The Met ball is one of the most iconic events in pop culture and, as one of the biggest names in the music industry, Swift’s Met history has been in the making for 13 years. In addition to configuring a landmark in Taylor’s fashion and style choices throughout the years, the gala has also influenced her life and music, famously receiving a nod on the 9th track of her ‘reputation’ album, Getaway Car.
